I share today with pleasure this information on the properties of hyssop officinalis: a plant used since antiquity that I recently discovered in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
We can read there : "Originally from southern Europe, hyssop grows spontaneously in dry, sunny areas. In the 1st century AD, the Greek physician Dioscorides already recommended it against pulmonary infections.
It contains a powerful expectorant, marrubine.
It is used in the composition of liqueurs and alcohols (pastis, Bénédictine and Chartreuse...)". For its taste very close to wild mint. Its flowers can be indeed picked to be added to salads, sauces or even soups. Hyssop leaves and flowers can also be dried before being used as aromatics to flavor oils and salad dressings.
In case of wet cough, hyssop can be used in the form of mother tincture (see manufacturer's indication) or infusions.
It is also used to treat secretory and inflammatory asthma.
In general, hyssop helps to cure lung ailments and flu-like conditions.
It has effects against sinusitis and otitis. It facilitates digestion and allows a more efficient expulsion of gases present in the intestine.
All parts of the plant are used for different therapeutic indications: antiseptic, stimulant, stomachic and expectorant. Its use is prohibited for pregnant women and children.
This plant is mentioned several times in the Bible, for its purifying and protective virtues, as well as in ancient Hebrew tradition, as a symbol of humility. In the Middle Age, it also symbolized faith, physical purity and moral regeneration.
